Every child will develop at his or
her own pace and it is important that educators respect this. I have babysat some children with special
needs and what they really need, is patience.
The try their hardest to communicate with us what they want or need and
it is our job to figure it out. We have
to be empathetic and patient because if we get frustrated when we don’t
understand what they are trying to tell us, they will start to get frustrated
too. Teachers need to have many
resources available in a classroom to meet the needs of differentiated learners
and must work with each student to figure out what works best for each
one. If one approach does not work, a
teacher should be able to adjust the curriculum accordingly to make sure that
each student benefits his or her education.

ReplyDeleteI love how you talked about patience. I often times forget that it is one of the most important tools in communicating with a student with special needs. They need practice and a warm heart that is willing to listen. As teachers, we need to provide many important resources to them in order to help them learn and grow.
Erica,
ReplyDeleteYou made a wonderful point of being patient with students, especially those with special needs. Because they are special needs students teachers need to be flexible and understanding of their disabilities. Often times I've seen teachers grow impatient and ultimately give up or "hand off" and make the special education teacher responsible for that student. Having good communication between the regular classroom teacher and special education is crucial so that the are both working towards the ultimate goal of having their student with special needs succeed!
Erica,
ReplyDeleteI love how you mentioned how us being frustrated leads to them being frustrated. Students can sense our frustration, and when they sense that, they can become discouraged. If we get frustrated, its best to just take a deep breath and then get back to them.
I agree with teachers needing to be patient. It doesn't get us anywhere getting frustrated over something that no one has any control. I also liked that you mentioned teachers using various teaching methods to reach differentiated learners. Good points!
